Description:
The long-awaited sequel to the “Nigeria70” series—which took music fans around the world by storm—is finally here! Uncovering the little-known golden age of 1980s Nigerian music, this collection spans Highlife, Juju, Afrobeat, Reggae, and early Hip-Hop. Featuring rare tracks—many of which are being officially reissued for the first time—this is the definitive compilation only Strut could deliver! “Nigeria80,” the long-awaited new release that carries on the legacy of the internationally acclaimed “Nigeria70” series, is the definitive collection that delves deep into the Nigerian music scene of the 1980s—a period marked by political and economic turmoil, yet one in which the music scene underwent a remarkable evolution alongside the rise of independent labels. Featuring a vibrant soundscape where diverse styles—including highlife, juju, afrobeat, reggae, electronic, and even the spirit of early hip-hop—intersect. Featuring a lineup of leading artists from the scene—including Victor Uwaifo, Prince Nico Nbaraga, Segun Adewale, Lekkan Animashoun, Evi=Edna Ogori, and I.C. Rock—many of these tracks are being officially reissued for the first time. Furthermore, Prince David Bull’s “SokoSoko” is noteworthy as the root that inspired contemporary Afrobeats star Starboy’s hit song “Soco.” Featuring detailed liner notes and the latest remasters, this definitive compilation conveys the creativity and vitality of 1980s Nigerian music to the present day. It comes highly recommended not only for fans of African music but also for enthusiasts of rare groove, world music, and DJs and collectors alike.
