Kokoko!

Description:

Congo is a pioneer of the acoustic revolution in Kinshasa, KOKOKO! Five years after their internationally acclaimed debut album, the long-awaited new album "Butu", released on Transgressive. Pioneers of Kinshasa's acoustic revolution, KOKOKO! have been captivating audiences around the world with their impressive sound and energetic performances since 2017. This includes being named Best Live Band by AIF, appearances on NPR's Tiny Desk and Boiler Room, appearances at festivals such as All Points East, SXSW, Green Man, and Pitchfork Festival, Grand Theft Auto and FIFA soundtracks. Their debut album, "Fongola," which DJ Mag described as "one-of-a-kind" and The Guardian called "a majestic new voice," received international acclaim. Now, KOKOKO! will release their long-awaited second album, "BUTU," on Transgressive Records.BUTU, which means "night" in the Lingala language, is inspired by the bustling after-sunset atmosphere of Congo's cities, and this experimental record dives deep into the heart of the chaos and celebrates the joyous and creative spirit of its inhabitants. With vocalist Makara Bianko at the helm and Xavier Thomas aka Debruit producing, the band explores a more electronic and upbeat sound. Butu recreates the frenetic atmosphere of a dynamic nightlife, where equipment is pushed to its limits through saturated and distorted speakers and dense post-sunset sounds. Using field recordings made in the middle of the night and "ready-made percussion" such as detergent bottles, they distort the sounds to bring them closer to the sounds of the night. The Democratic Republic of Congo continues to experience serious human rights violations, including mass killings due to armed conflict and interregional violence, repression of dissidents, and mistreatment of detainees.People in the region affected by the armed conflict are particularly hard hit by mass displacement and an escalating humanitarian crisis. In addition, the DRC's abundant natural resources are routinely exploited by major high-tech companies, contributing to conflict in the region. Because verbal political protest in the DRC carries the risk of imprisonment, street performers often use body and sound to signal their critique. With BUTU, KOKOKO! provided a punk-like energy that bottled up the attitudes of a generation and took the alchemy of the DRC's block parties to new global heights.
