Description:
Theodore Fröhlich (1803-1836) was a talented composer from his teenage years, and studied law in Basel in 1822. He studied composition in Berlin under Carl Friedrich Zelter (1758-1832), Bernhard Klein (1793-1832), and Ludwig Berger (1777-1839). During this time, he also became acquainted with the young Felix Mendelssohn, with whom he composed numerous songs, choral works, string quartets, and symphonies in his 20s. Many song cycles were published in Germany during the same period. Still unable to make a living in Berlin, he returned to Switzerland in 1830. Thereafter, he worked as a teacher at a music school and conducted a choir and an amateur orchestra. However, in addition to his financial insecurity, the breakdown of his marriage and his low reputation in his own country made him desperate, and in October 1836, he committed suicide by drowning himself in the River Aare. In this album, tenor Raphael Haehn performs with keyboardist Xin Huang in a recording of songs by Fröhlich, the world premiere recording of all the songs. All songs are world premiere recordings. Haehn holds a master's degree in vocal music from the University of Music and Performing Arts Zurich and a master's degree in ancient music from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. A promising young star who has performed as a soloist in Europe and the U.S. with renowned conductors such as Ton Koopman, France Bruchen, and Howard Griffiths, as well as with the NDR Choir, the Dutch Bach Society, and the RIAS Chamber Choir. He has participated in many recordings, including soloing in a collection of cantatas by the Bach Foundation Orchestra.
