Beyond the horizons pioneered by that very “Nigeria70”—the frenzy of 1980s Nigeria returns here. Over the past two decades, African funk and psychedelic rock have been rapidly brought to light. There can be no doubt that one of the catalysts for this movement was the STRUT label’s compilation *Nigeria70—The Definitive Story of 1970s Funky Lagos*. Adopting a perspective distinct from conventional “world music” approaches, the label has been unearthing a steady stream of Juju and Highlife recordings left behind primarily in 1970s Nigeria. Combining a raw, earthy energy—like dust swirling in the air—with the elegance of Latin music, particularly Cuban, and further incorporating a unique interpretation of contemporary North American music fused with local folklore, this music captivated not only fans of African music but also fans of rare groove, reggae, rock—and beyond. Strut’s latest release, *Nigeria 80*, is the long-awaited new chapter following the legendary “Nigeria 70” series. Focusing on 1980s Nigeria, this album delves deeply into that vibrant musical world. This release unearths the music of that decade—from Lagos to Enugu—a period marked by chaos yet brimming with creativity. Although Nigeria faced severe economic and political challenges at the time, the music scene continued to gain momentum. The driving force behind this growth was the expansion of independent labels such as Tabansi and Phonodisk, which supported local artists and significantly broadened creative freedom. The 1980s were also a time of remarkable progress for female artists, with pioneers like Onyeka Onwenu paving the way for the next generation of performers, lyricists, and producers. This release captures the profound depth of music unique to that era. Continuing from the previous volume, DJ Duncan Bruckner—also known as a collector—handpicked and supervised the track selection. Remarkably, every track on this album is being reissued for the first time. Compared to the previous volume, this release also spotlights more experimental and genre-crossing sounds. From Highlife to Juju, Afrobeat, and even reggae and proto-hip-hop, Duncan Brookner’s masterful curation—which painstakingly captures the musical diversity of a single country—is sure to impress even the most discerning DJs and collectors.
