The 18th release of the Lucerne Festival Series features Kubelík and the New Philharmonia Orchestra performing Haydn's Symphony No. 99, Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4, and Schoenberg's Piano Concerto with John Ogdon! As the 18th release of the Lucerne Festival Series, the first master release on the acclaimed audite label, Kubelík's official first recording from the September 1968 concert is now available! Kubelík's first appearance at the festival was on August 28, 1948. A few weeks before this concert, Kubelík, who was opposed to the communization of the Czech Republic, went to England to participate in the Edinburgh Festival that same year, and then defected to England. He appeared at the Lucerne Festival 25 times until 1990, making it one of the most important festivals for Kubelík, and one of the most important for him. He has performed Bartók's opera Bluebeard's Castle (August 15, 1962) (AU-95626) on CD (Kubelík became a Swiss citizen in 1972; he died in Lucerne in 1996). On September 8, a few days after the suppression of the Prague Spring, Kubelík appeared at the Lucerne Festival.With the New Philharmonia Orchestra, Kubelik performs Haydn's Symphony No. 99, Schoenberg's Piano Concerto with John Ogdon as soloist, and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4. Haydn's Symphony No. 99 is one of Kubelík's favorites. The performance was full of vivacity from start to finish. Schoenberg's Piano Concerto, which John Ogdon has never recorded officially. Ogdon accurately understood the piece, which is written in strict twelve-tone technique, and succeeded in capturing the audience's attention, which is evident of his careful rehearsals with Kubelík.
