Description:
Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic make their Salzburg Festival debut in its entirety for the first time! Shostakovich's "Revolution" and his own "Age of Anxiety" In the summer of 1959, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra led by Bernstein made a stop in Salzburg during its European tour, making a sensational festival debut. This is a recording of that concert, held in the last year of the old Festival Theatre, and all of the performances are officially and completely premiered, which is quite a feat. The program is notable for its political tone, reflecting the political climate of the Cold War, with works by both the U.S. and the Soviet Union. (Barber's "Essay No. 2 for Orchestra" was also performed on the same day.The Second Symphony, composed ten years earlier in 1949 by the 31-year-old Bernstein, is an explosion of youthful brilliance in a style that freely combines chromaticism, romanticism, dodecadence, and jazz. Salzburg was the perfect opportunity for Bernstein to showcase himself in Europe as a successful composer representing contemporary America, and the fact that he boldly brought his own work to Salzburg is a sign of his confidence. The piano soloist, Seymour Lipkin, who was also the assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic (1959-1960), played the piano with superb technique. The symphony by Shostakovich, which is said to have been endorsed by the composer, was also performed.Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic made a stereo session recording of the Fifth Symphony two months later, on October 20, 1959, at Symphony Hall in Boston, and a live recording in July 1979 at the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan Grand Hall. The latter recording is especially famous for its tension and intensity, but this performance, made at the age of 41 and just after he was appointed Music Director and Chief Conductor of the New York Philharmonic in 1958, is the fastest of the three, with a special atmosphere and spirit that is overwhelming and spectacular. It is the fastest of the three, with a special air and spirit that is overwhelmingly magnificent. King International
