Mendelssohn: *The Uncle from Boston* This is the world premiere recording of Mendelssohn’s long-lost opera, *The Uncle from Boston*. Composed in 1824 when Mendelssohn was just 15 years old, the work was reportedly performed only once in a private setting for family and friends, and then lay dormant for 180 years. The story follows Fanny, a young woman from Berlin, who is in love with an officer named Karl. When her uncle—returning from the American Revolutionary War—arrives to take care of her after her parents’ death, she tells him that Karl is actually her brother Theodore, who is away serving in the military, in order to deceive him. From there, all sorts of commotion ensues. Mendelssohn’s music is remarkably mature, even for a teenager. Rilling, a great admirer of Mendelssohn, has crafted a magnificent performance.
