Description:
The Ricercar Consort's latest disc, which offers the full and rich sound of the viola da gamba, is the latest release from the Ricercar Consort, well-known in Japan. Although the members and compositions change according to the piece, except for the leader Philippe Pierlot, all the discs they release are highly acclaimed for their consistent style and depth of musicality. This album is a collection of viol (viola da gamba) ensembles by de Sainte-Colombes and his successors. Jean de Sainte-Colombes was a viol player and composer of the 17th century French Baroque. Besides being a teacher of Marin Marais, his life is considered a mystery today. He is said to have left 67 conserts for two viols, seven of which are exquisitely played here by Philippe Pierlot and Lucille Boulanger. He had a son who was a composer known as the "son of Sainte-Colombe," but the charm of this album is that it contains viol ensembles not by him but by his contemporaries Louis Coupland and Chambonier. The addition of Rolf Lislevin's theorbo sound, which is a masterpiece of the instrument, gives us a taste of the beauty of antiquity. King International
