Performed over two nights on October 24 and 25, 2024, in Paris, the Orchestre National de France and its music director, Macerali, presented Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection.” Conductor Maceral, born in Romania in 1980, who had previously focused on the French repertoire with the Orchestre National de France, boldly took on the same "Resurrection"—and with the very same Orchestre National de France—with bold determination. More than 70 years after Bernstein, Macerel presented a vision that could be said to be the exact opposite of his legendary predecessor’s grand and solemn interpretation. A delicacy reminiscent of chamber music and an idyllic warmth come to the fore, and the musical texture is surprisingly light. The strings possess exceptional transparency, and in response, the woodwinds are filled with a fresh vitality, resonating with the showering brightness characteristic of French orchestras. Even during the loudest passages, the performance remains so clear that every detail of each part is discernible, and the rich, song-like melodies are truly astonishing. The soprano is Hanna-Elisabeth Müller, who performs at the world’s most renowned opera houses and is a leading figure on the global stage in recitals and music festivals; and on mezzo-soprano, Karen Kargil, whose amber-hued, deep voice has made her a prominent Mahler specialist and who also performs at the world’s most renowned opera houses. The performance remains natural and supple from start to finish, and despite the myriad and varied soundscapes that shape this symphony, its unity is magnificently preserved.
