Que Vola
Description:
The latest release from the NO FORMAT label, whose releases are always in the spotlight, is the debut album from the up-and-coming French Cuban jazz band Quai Bola! The band was founded by French trombonist Fidel Fourneyron, who first traveled to Cuba in 2012 with only a trombone. Intrigued by Cuban music, Fidel went back to Cuba in 2017, and found Barbaro Crespo Richard aka 'Barbarito' from Osain del Monte, one of the most popular rumba groups in the country, The group includes Barbaro Crespo Richard aka 'Barbarito', Ramon Tamayo Martinez, and Adonis Panter Calderon, the group's core members.Nganga", a tight groove with a Fender Rhodes accompaniment, starts off with a fusion of French jazz elegance and mystical Afro-Cuban rhythms; "Calle Luz", an Afrobeat track named after the street Fidel jumped into on his first visit to Cuba; "Que Vola", an ambient x Afro-Cuban track similar to last year's much-talked-about IFE. The ambient x Afro-Cuban style of "Que Vola," which is similar to the much talked about "IFE" from last year, gradually increases in tempo to a hot session, and "Iyesa," in which a horn ensemble plays complex phrases over Afro-Cuban rhythms.... The percussion ensemble, which will make any rhythm fanatic swoon, is a treat to listen to, but the best of all is the direction that brings out the ensemble's unique qualities, which are never too hot, but always cool. This is a remarkable work full of contemporary sensibility, as is typical of NO FORMAT, an up-and-coming label that has released new-age world music by artists such as Um Sangare, Geraldo Toto, and Lucas Santana. Que Vola are: Adonis Panter Calderon (percussion) Ramon Tamayo Martinez (percussion) Barbaro Crespo Richard (percussion) Elie Duris (drums) Thibaud Soulas (double bass) Bruno Ruder (Fender Rhodes) Fidel Fourneyron (trombone) Aymeric Avice (trumpet) Hugues Mayot (tenor saxophone) Benjamin Dousteyssier (alto & baritone saxophone)
