Performed by Nicky Spence and Julius Drake, this is a rich and varied collection of Faure's songs, with a focus on his important work "Gentle Songs". Fauré's songs are masterpieces that demonstrate his remarkable gift for melody and his keen sensitivity to the subtle nuances of the French language. Gentle Song," based on a poem by Paul Verlaine, was written during Fauré's first full experience of love, and is an important work that both completes the poetic style of his early years and foreshadows the changes in style of his later years. It is extremely passionate, characterized by intense chromaticism and innovative harmony. Because of its novelty, Fauré's friend and mentor Saint-Saëns said, "Fauré has completely lost his mind," and even the younger composers were divided on the work's merits. The version recorded here is the one that Fauré himself later created, with piano and string quintet (string quartet plus double bass) accompaniment. Scottish tenor Nicky Spence won a double Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine Award for her Janacek song cycle (CDA68282) and was named "Young Singer of the Year" at the 2015 International Opera Awards.
