His piano playing, which reveals completely different nuances depending on the piece, is simply magnificent. Listening to Rangel’s performance—which achieves a dazzling resonance in the *Hammerklavier* while weaving a moist, resonant sound in No. 31 that evokes the clear sky of late autumn—may well change your preconceived notions of the traditional Steinway tone. The “Diabelli Variations” are a work in which Rangel excels; he succeeds brilliantly in tracing and analyzing the thorough development of the theme, which could be described, in a sense, as “sticky.” The six bagatelles are also well worth listening to.
