The "Lamentations," sung by Alfred Deller, has been immortalized on the first Harmonie Mundi album, and now a new masterpiece is born. The idea of juxtaposing Purcell with his contemporaries, composers who were both his teachers and his students, we felt was necessary to give a fuller picture of the richness of music that surrounded and nurtured him during his lifetime." Thanks to Justin Taylor's generosity in helping us research the repertoire, we were faced with the solution of many vexing problems. I myself thought that Purcell's airs were the best, based on the "ground" bass, of which Purcell was an absolute master.But we also found great vocal and instrumental work in the music of John Blow, William Croft, Jeremiah Clark, John Eccles, and the enigmatic 'Mr. Barrett.'" He has performed with the best conductors in the world of classical music, including Minkowski, Rousset, and Jacobs, and has performed with the Berlin Academy of Ancient Music, Café Zimmermann, and many others.
