Description:

Lotto and Les Siecle also respond with "Destiny"! A completely new image of Beethoven's symphonies! The most notable new releases of the Beethoven Year are about to be released. In the first half of this year, Kulenzis and Musica Eterna's shocking "Destiny" has been the talk of the town, but in the second half, Lotto and Siecle are fighting back with the same piece. Lotto (born in November 1971) and Kulenzis (born in February 1972) are the same age, in the Japanese sense of the word, but they did not burn with rivalry, and challenged this masterpiece with completely different values. Lotto and Les Siecle centered their theme on Beethoven's special relationship with France. Initially an admirer of Napoleon and essentially revolutionary in sensibility, Beethoven is said to have loved the Parisian air and even considered taking up residence there. Lotto states that the influence of the French Revolution and revolutionary songs can be felt in Symphony No. 5, "Destiny." This recording uses the 2019 Bärenreiter edition score, and the wind instruments are replicas, but of interest are German instruments from the early 1800s. The movements are timed as follows: 1st movement: 6'56", 2nd movement: 9'02", 3rd movement: 5'12", 4th movement: 10'33" The longer finale is due to the repetitions, which are basically due to the fast tempo with Lotto's typical driving force. The crisp rhythms, never-before-heard string phrasing, bright and brilliant tone, and other aspects of the performance set it apart from German-style performances, and it is truly a performance that only Lotto and Les Siecle could deliver, and it is the ultimate in fulfillment. The coupling is François-Joseph Gosek's (1734-1829) "Symphony in 17 Voices," published in 1809. Gosek is best known for his "Gavotte," but he was also a witness to history, having been acquainted with Rameau and Stamitz and living until later than Beethoven and Schubert. Gosek was very popular as a symphonist, and the high standard of French wind instrumentalists at the time was reflected in his works, from which Beethoven learned a great deal and applied it to his works. The "Symphony in 17 Voices" is an expanded version of the overture in three parts originally composed in the 1780s, and includes quotations from revolutionary songs such as "S'ila. It is also believed to have been influenced by Beethoven's "Destiny," which was published just before the adaptation. A critical edition of the score, published in 2018, is used, which is very different from the score used in the past. It sounds like a masterpiece with powerful performances by Lotto and Les Siecle.
