Scarlatti wrote more than 100 operas and can be considered one of the most important composers in the early history of opera, but his works are very rarely performed. This is a reissue of his masterpiece "Griselda," recorded by Jacobs in 2002. The story takes place in Sicily. King Gualtiero is about to cruelly judge his wife Griselda, a very sensible woman, to make sure of her fidelity. But her mercy and virtuous character overcome all, and the story ends with a grand finale. The beautiful arias interspersed throughout the piece are well worth listening to. The ensemble of the Berlin Academy of Ancient Music led by Jacobs and Figueiredo and the beauty of the basso continuo (including Shizuko Noiri on the lute) are a wonder to behold. After its premiere in 1721, "Griselda" was never performed again due to musical taste and economic reasons.The long-awaited recording by Jacobs, famous singers, and instrumentalists of the opera, which came back into the spotlight in the late 19th century and was recognized as A. Scarlatti's masterpiece, is now back! King International
