The Beethoven Chamber Works by the splendid members of Kellas, Zepek, and Steyer [CD1] are Beethoven's Violin Sonatas by Zepek and Steyer. The instruments used were violins from the four string quartet instruments that Lichnowsky presented to Beethoven for his string quartet. It is of great significance that the Beethoven House in Bonn was the first to permit its use for the recording. The ensemble of the two prodigies is brilliant, from the awesome brilliance of the C minor sonata to the passionate melancholy of the A minor sonata. The first note of Beethoven's early work No. 3 on [CD2] is in C minor, a favorite of Beethoven's. From the first note, you can hear the sparks flying between the three musicians. The next piece, No. 5, is a highlight of the second movement, Steyer's "Ghost. Steyer plays this characteristic and fantastic movement, which is also the origin of the title "Ghost," in a morbid and haunting manner. The two strings that intertwine with it are nothing short of superb. Hummel, the coupling, was a man whom Beethoven considered a rival.
