Conducted by Kent Nagano! Oratorio by Sean Shepherd, juror for the 2027 Toru Takemitsu Composition Award! The Toru Takemitsu Composition Award, sponsored by the Tokyo Opera City Cultural Foundation, is a prize for orchestral works by new composers that continues to nurture new talent for the next generation. The jury for the 2027 competition was led by American contemporary composer Sean Shepard (b.1979). With an orthodox style that is heir to the genealogy of American contemporary music, his orchestral works have been actively introduced in the United States and Europe in recent years. On a Clear Day is a magnificent oratorio for solo cello, chorus, and orchestra composed by Shepherd in 2022-2023 using text from a series of poems by the renowned German poet Ulla Hahn. The world premiere took place in April 2023 at Carnegie Hall in the United States, conducted by Kent Nagano and performed by the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra. This album contains a live recording of the performance the following month when it was performed again in Germany.The project, which features music by an American composer to German poems, American conductor Kent Nagano, who leads a German orchestra and choir, and German cellist Jan Vogler, who lives in New York City, embodies Nagano and Vogler's philosophy of transatlantic transcendence through music The project embodies Nagano and Vogler's philosophy of transatlantic music.
