Description:

Second album by a talented harpist who further expands the possibilities of her instrument with Baroque musicFantasia, the second album by Magdalena Hoffmann, a talented young harpist from Basel, Switzerland, is now available on Deutsche Grammophon. On her debut album, "Nightscapes" ("A Wonderful Recital" - "The Whole Note"), Hoffmann performed works from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, and was awarded the 2022 Opus Classics Award for Young Talent of the Year. For his second album, Hoffmann goes back in time and focuses on Baroque music. Hoffmann performs on harp Fantasias and Preludes originally written for keyboard and lute by Johann Sebastian Bach, his sons Wilhelm Friedemann and Carl Philipp Emanuel, and Johann Sebastian's contemporaries Handel and Weiss. Hoffman plays them on harp. The term "fantasia," unused since the Renaissance, came to refer to instrumental music characterized by a combination of stylistic invention and structural discipline in the 18th century. Improvisatory freedom and formal rigor come together to create a living, breathing entity. These contrasts are the rich soil in which the music is created" (Magdalena Hoffman). The composers she chose may not have written for the harp, but all of these genre pieces, named Fantasia, Prelude, Overture, Air, and Allegro, are perfectly suited to the instrument. Magdalena Hoffman brings the improvisational spirit of the baroque to the album Fantasia, utilizing the resonance and versatility of the harp to add new impetus and spatial breadth to this richly imaginative repertoire. The harp offers the potential for great inner tension and a kind of spiritual impetus that has a liberating effect." Thus, each fantasia is like a snapshot of music that sounds different each time it is played, its energy infinite and never reliably captured."(Magdalena Hoffman) "Hoffman's mastery continues to dazzle.... The balance between her singing lyricism and unstoppable forward momentum is particularly impressive."--"Gramophone" magazine (on her debut album "Nightscapes") Universal Music/IMS
