Description:
Neal Morse's latest album, "No Hill For A Climber," was created with young local musicians. Neal Morse's latest release, "No Hill For A Climber," is the result of a collaboration with a group of talented young local musicians. The exciting idea began with a proposal from Neal's wife received at the end of 2023. When we started thinking about our plans for 2024, my wife suggested that we do something with some of the wonderful and talented young local musicians like Chris Riley, Andre Madatian, and Philip Martin. We had played together at Christmas concerts and events, so I knew what they were capable of. Neal quickly realized that the advantages of working with young talent were novelty and immediacy. There is a freshness that comes with working with young musicians. Some of the musical ideas they brought to the table I never would have thought of.In addition to Johnny Bisaham, who was invited at the idea of Neal, Joe Ganzelli also backed up this work with an excellent performance. The title of the album is "No Hill For A Climber," after a line from Barbara Kingsolver's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "Demon Copperhead. No Hill For A Climber" is an energetic blend of youth and seasoned experience. Neal explains about "All the Rage," which is shown in a studio session, "This was the second song we all recorded together. I wrote the song with them in mind and we played it right away. We recorded most of it without a click track to give it a live feel, but the piano solo was a little tricky. I'm very happy with how it turned out, and I feel like the energy of the band comes through in the song. This album includes two long epics, the 28-minute, seven-chapter "No Hill For A Climber" and the 22-minute, five-chapter "Eternity In Your Eyes," as well as three shorter songs. It is an ideal progressive rock album, but Neal considers it very unique. "If I had to compare it to albums I've made in the past, it might be structured like 'Bridge Across Forever' or 'Spock's Beard's V.' There are voices, performance styles, and soundscapes on 'No Hill For A Climber' that many people have never heard before! It's a sound that even I find a little different than usual, because it's something that everyone I've worked with changes me. I hope everyone likes it!"
