Born in Barcelona on April 12, 1933, Monserrat Cavalier graduated with honors from the Liceu Conservatory in 1954, joined the Basel Opera Company in 1956, and made her debut the following year as Mimi in Puccini's "Boheme. During those two years, she performed roles in R. Strauss and Mozart operas, including Salome. After two years at the Bremen Opera, she returned to Barcelona and made her debut at the Liceu Opera in 1962 as the title role in R. Strauss' "Arabella"; in April 1965, she appeared at Carnegie Hall in Donizetti's "Lucrezia Borgia," understudying Marilyn Horne, with sensational In December, she won rave reviews for her role as Margarita in Gounod's "Faust" at the Metropolitan Opera and appeared in opera houses around the world. Throughout her long career, Cavalier has found great vocal and dramatic stylistic expression and has been successful in a variety of legendary productions.Her 1988 song "Barcelona" with Freddie Mercury became an international hit, was recognized as the official song of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, and was a big hit on pop charts throughout Europe.
