Olga Scheps' latest recording is her first chamber music - a new recording of Weinberg's great work, the Piano Quintet, which celebrates the 100th anniversary of his birth in 2019, Mieczyslaw Weinberg (or Moisei Samuilovich Weinberg). Born in Poland, he was a contemporary composer who worked in the Soviet Union and Russia. In exile in the Soviet Union, he was banned from performing his works because of his criticism of Zhidanov, and was himself arrested. After the war, however, his honor was restored, and he made a name for himself as a composer, including a friendship with Shostakovich, and by the time of his death in 1996, he had left behind numerous works, including about 20 symphonies and 7 operas. These works were considered "subgenre of Shostakovich" and forgotten for a time, but with the recent reevaluation and performance of various pieces, his unique compositional style and unexpected lyricism have been reevaluated, and in the 21st century, he has gained new popularity as "one of the leading Russian composers of the 20th century" (see below).
