Description:
A world heritage of sound! The Historic Return of Horowitz, the musical event of the century, has been vividly brought back to life with a wealth of documentation and rare sound recordings. 1965 in the United States, the assassination of President Kennedy was still vividly remembered. The assassination of President Kennedy was still vividly remembered, the Civil Rights Act prohibiting racial discrimination had been passed, and the spark of the Vietnam War was on the verge of exploding. At such a time, the world's greatest pianist was about to make one of the most famous comebacks in history. Horowitz's 12-year concert hiatus from 1953 to 1965 was a mystery to the music world, and it was only on January 12, 1953, after Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 with the New York Philharmonic conducted by George Szell, celebrating the 25th anniversary of his American debut, that the world's greatest pianist was about to make his comeback. At the party, Horowitz, deeply emotionally scarred by Szell's words and actions about him, became depressed and suspended his concert activities after his recital at Carnegie Hall on February 25 of the same year. Although his de facto retirement at the age of 50 was not a pleasant one, Horowitz's mental condition gradually improved, and he was already planning to return to concert activities in 1957. Everything changed in June of that year when his daughter Sonia attempted suicide, which again plunged Horowitz into a state of severe depression, to the point that he underwent electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).When tickets went on sale for the Carnegie Hall recital on April 26, fans lined up around the hall for the entire morning to get tickets. By midnight, there were 278 people in line. By midnight, the line had grown to 278, and by the morning of the sale, there were 1,500 fans in line. 3:38 p.m. on Sunday, May 9, 1965, Horowitz stepped onto the Carnegie Hall stage for his first return to the concert stage in 12 years. The full house, including such luminaries of the musical arts as Stokowski, Bernstein, Van Cliburn, and Nureyev, welcomed Horowitz with a standing ovation, and he responded with a performance full of character. A live recording of the concert was released a month later by Columbia Records and became an unprecedented bestseller, winning a Grammy Award. The "Historic Return" concert will forever be remembered as one of the most exciting musical events in history. In anticipation of his return, Horowitz rehearsed at Carnegie Hall twice in January and twice in April of that year before the historic concert on May 9. To get a feel for the hall's acoustics and to ease the nerves of his return, he performed for his wife and a very limited number of close friends who were invited.Columbia Records, with whom Horowitz had a recording contract at the time, not only recorded all of these "private recitals," but also his second recital at Carnegie Hall in April 1966 and all of the rehearsals that preceded it.
