Description:
The recording was made from a 1996 performance at the Châtelet Theatre in Paris, France. It became the standard for subsequent productions. However, this is not a complete performance of the original version, and some ballets have been cut for production reasons. The difficult task of getting people to join the six main cast members is not here in the style of an ensemble drama with conflicts interwoven here. Not only is the cast superbly cast, but Pappano's powerful performance, in which the Paris orchestra's sound is superbly organized and sounded, brings out the full appeal of this opera.
