A super heavyweight disc coupling Stockhausen's difficult music with Beethoven's Hammerklavier! Stockhausen was born about a hundred years after Beethoven's death. This is a unique disc that couples two composers who seem to have nothing in common with each other, each of whom composed great piano works of superb technique. Stockhausen's Piano X is a meticulously designed piece with a very mathematical conception, but it makes extensive use of tone clusters and glissandos, and its sound currents, like raging waves, overwhelm the listener. Beethoven's Hammerklavier is a large-scale work that demands the utmost from the pianist in terms of technique and skill, and in this sense, it is perhaps the twin of Stockhausen's piano works. Marc Pontus, the pianist who made this crazy coupling CD, is good at contemporary music such as Xenakis and Boulez (whose complete piano works are recorded on BCD9456) as well as Stockhausen, and it can be said that he reinterprets Beethoven from a contemporary perspective. The music is clear and unclouded, with not a trace of hesitation. The clear, unclouded, unwavering touch and the swirling torrent of energy make this a piece that is well worth listening to.Please take a listen! Tobu Shoji Co.
