Description:
Andrei Gugnin, Hyperion Vol. 3! Scriabin's Mazurkas collection!Winner of the Special Prize at the 2019 Tchaikovsky International Competition! Andrei Gugnin's new recording! The third Hyperion recording by Andrei Gugnin, an up-and-coming pianist born in Russia in 1987! Gugnin has won the second prize at the 2013 Beethoven International Competition in Vienna, the first prize at the 2014 Gina Bachauer International Competition, the first prize at the 2016 Sydney International Competition, and has performed with Gergiev & the Mariinsky Theatre. In 2019, he won a special prize at the Tchaikovsky International Competition and made two successful performances in Japan in May and September of the same year. And now comes Andrei Gugnin and a collection of mazurkas by his native Russian composer, Scriabin. The mazurka is a Polish folk dance, but it was Chopin who developed it into an art form. Scriabin, who loved Chopin's music from his childhood, is known to have composed more mazurkas than any other Russian composer, partly due to his influence.Other Russian composers such as Balakirev, Glinka, Tchaikovsky, and Borodin also composed mazurkas, and these so-called Russian mazurkas may have influenced Gugnin. Gugnin performs these works, which are rooted in the music of his native country, with his characteristic hard-edged pianism. Gugnin, who won high acclaim for his Russian music with the Shostakovich album (PCDA68267), which was selected as a "Special Recording of the Month" by Record Art and "Recording of the Month" by BBC Music Magazine, will bring his skill to this collection of Scriabin's mazurkas!
