The first commercial recording of Rameau's first opera Sir Anthony Lewis directed the annual staging of the opera at the Barber Institute at the University of Birmingham, first to local audiences and then to a worldwide audience with these Decca and Argo recordings, showing that Baroque opera is no longer just for scholars He showed audiences around the world in these Decca and Argo recordings that Baroque opera is no longer the preserve of scholars, but has a drama as vivid and powerful as the works of Mozart and Puccini. Jean-Philippe Rameau is now universally acknowledged as a Baroque composer on a par with Bach and Handel, largely due to recordings of such compelling intensity as this "Ippolito et Arisi," July 1965, a few months after the Barber Institute's stage It was recorded at Decca's West Hampstead Studios.
