He grew up surrounded by music and received his first piano lessons from his mother, a pianist who had studied under Arthur Friedheim, one of Liszt’s students. At the Juilliard School, he studied under Rosina Levin. After graduating, he garnered significant attention by winning the Leventritt Foundation Award and made his debut with major orchestras across the United States, including the New York Philharmonic and the Cleveland Orchestra. In 1958, at the age of 23, he won first prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition held in Moscow, instantly catapulting him into the spotlight. Upon his return to the United States, Van Cliburn became a national hero—even receiving a parade in New York—and signed a recording contract with RCA. Since 1962, he has organized the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, devoting himself to discovering and nurturing young pianists. He is also the only pianist to have been invited by every U.S. president—from President Truman to President Obama—to perform at the White House. In 2012, he revealed that he had progressive bone cancer and is currently undergoing treatment. It was recently reported that, in September, despite his illness, he attended the 50th-anniversary concert of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Fort Worth and took the stage to deliver a moving speech.
