2014 Salzburg Festival Beethoven Cycle by Buchbinder A Blu-ray featuring Rudolf Buchbinder’s performance of Beethoven’s complete piano sonatas at the 2014 Salzburg Festival has been released. This marks the first time in the Salzburg Festival’s long history that a complete cycle of Beethoven’s piano sonatas has been performed. The cycle was hailed as “a feat that only he could have accomplished, offering a new interpretation of Beethoven.” Viennese pianist Rudolf Buchbinder demonstrated his talent from an early age: he entered the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna at age 5, gave his first concert at age 9, and began studying in the master class of renowned piano teacher Bruno Seidlhofer at age 11. He boasts an impressive list of awards, including winning the Munich International Music Competition at age 15, receiving a special prize at the Van Cliburn Competition at age 20, and winning the Beethoven Competition at age 21. Today, he is highly acclaimed worldwide as a pianist who carries on the Viennese tradition. Although Buchbinder has a wide-ranging repertoire, its core remains Beethoven. To date, Buchbinder has recorded the complete Beethoven piano sonatas twice: on Teldec (1980/82, studio recordings) and on RCA (2010, live recordings). He has also performed the complete set in 50 concerts, meticulously studying the scores in search of new discoveries and consistently delighting and moving his audience. Volume 3 includes bonus video footage featuring Buchbinder discussing Beethoven’s piano sonatas. Buchbinder, who continues to perform all 32 works of this collection—often referred to as the “Universe of Music”—has stated: “(Omitted) One must not seek beauty alone.
