A powerful performance that vividly brought to life this emotionally rich cello sonata. Anton Rubinstein is renowned for establishing the Russian Musical Society and significantly contributing to the founding of the St. Petersburg Conservatory, aiming to properly cultivate Russian musicians within the Russian Empire where it was commonplace to invite foreign musicians to perform at courts and theaters. Rubinstein, who showed musical talent early on, debuted as a pianist at age 10. From age 11, he performed internationally in France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, and England, mastering European compositional techniques and helping shape the Russian music scene. The two cello sonatas Rubinstein composed in his twenties are quite compelling works, long awaiting a powerful interpretation. The arrival of Matilda Corialdo's recording, which delivers a performance with clear expression, is therefore most welcome. Koriado's performance doesn't shy away from bold expression just because it's a low-pitched instrument, letting it sing out powerfully. This makes the third movement of Sonata No. 1, with its Moonlight Sonata-like theme, particularly clear. Rubinstein was captivated at age 12 in Paris by Offenbach, a master cellist, performing Beethoven's Cello Sonata No. 3. The two cello sonatas he composed in his twenties are finished in a style that colors Beethoven's form with rich, Romantic emotion. Matilda Corialdo and Stefano Rigolatti began their duo in 2013. They have already built substantial careers performing extensively across Europe and Asia, and here they deliver an expressive performance marked by their well-synchronized interplay. Note that the artist's name is pronounced "Matilda Corialdo." Recorded at Tranquillo Recording Studio in Milan, northern Italy, from September 30 to October 1, 2024. CD running time is approximately 69 minutes. The case is made of 10mm thick polystyrene (jewel case). The booklet (English, 8 pages) includes liner notes by Ioana Hadarig, a musicologist based in Milan. Made in the EU, the disc is manufactured by Germany's Optimal Media, a company well-known for major labels.
