A collection of works from the monarchy era by Taplay, the long-lived composer who lived through the Revolution [Overview] ◆Born into a family of musicians: Jean-François Taplay (1738–1822) was a French musician of the Classical period. During the monarchy, he worked as a church organist. At the age of 34, he was appointed principal organist at the chapel of the Royal Military Academy in Paris, a position he held for approximately 14 years until 1786, when, at the age of 48, he resigned due to poor health; he was granted a lifetime pension by King Louis XVI. ◆ Taplay Survives the Revolution: However, when the French Revolution broke out three years later, his pension was revoked. Taplay continued to work as a musician—performing, composing, teaching, and publishing—primarily in Paris, and survived for 33 years after the Revolution before passing away in 1822 at the age of 84 in the suburbs of Paris. At the time of his death, he was serving as a chapels organist.
