Description:

Valentin Silvestrov is a composer from Kieu who now lives in Berlin. Although he wrote avant-garde works in his early years, he was expelled from the Union of Soviet Composers in 1974, which made it difficult for him to be active in the public arena. He began to change his style around this time, writing nostalgic works with beautiful sounds reminiscent of the late Romanticism, and these have been loved by many to this day. The two works on this album are "Dedication," his sixth symphony, and "Postlude," one of his best-known works of the 1980s. The Dedication was composed for violinist Gidon Kremer, a close friend of Silvestrov's, and was premiered by Kremer in Munich. Although the beginning of the piece is full of dissonance, the highlight of the piece is the final movement, which is reminiscent of Mahler's Adagietto, and is so full of peace and longing that Kremer, hearing a recording of his own performance, exclaimed, "This is like the world of the movie "Death in Venice". The opening of the "Postlude" is also intense, reminiscent of twelve-tone music, but the gentle, nostalgic sound of the piano gradually takes over, and the sound fades away into silence at the end. Both pieces are written in Silvestrov's own style, using tonality and traditional melody, but with a mixture of dramatic and lyricism. The violinist for "Dedication" is the Polish virtuoso Janusz Wawrzowski. In this album, he sings Silvestrov's music with a beautiful tone using a Stradivari made in 1685. Naxos Japan
