Description:

This album features works by four outstanding composers who helped shape American music in the mid-20th century. Copland's "Bidding Ground" is a suite of songs from a revue about a girl about to graduate from high school, based on events in a Midwestern farmhouse. Idyllic ranch scenes and longing for the city are depicted with Copland's typical clarity of tune. The Promise of Living," which in the opera would include a chorus, is performed here by orchestra only. Creston's "Saxophone Concerto" was written for Cecil Leeson, a player who popularized the saxophone in the United States in the 1930s. The work is highly regarded as a pursuit of the "truly beautiful sound and possibilities" of this instrument, which was often used in jazz bands. Ulysses Kaye, who composed "Pietà" for chorus and string orchestra, was the first black composer to win the Prix de Rome. It is said to have been inspired by Michelangelo's famous sculpture of the same name, now enshrined in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, when he was in Rome. The soloist Anna Matics discovered the work and approached Falletta to perform it. Pistone's "The Wonderful Whistle Blower" was commissioned by Arthur Fiedler for the Boston Pops Orchestra in 1938.This ballet music depicts a traveling circus troupe led by a magical musician who can heal the sorrows of his listeners. Falletta's skillful conducting highlights the wonder of each piece. Naxos Japan
