Description:
A version for two pianos arranged by the composer himself. While both pieces are notable for their harmonic progressions and other distinctive features, No. 4 in particular represents the pinnacle of Brahms’s compositional maturity. This recording allows listeners to appreciate the piece’s essential structure and is a must-hear for any Brahms fan. Brahms was an outstanding pianist who composed piano works throughout his entire life. In addition to his works for solo piano, he arranged many of his own orchestral, chamber, and vocal works for four-hand piano with the intention of making them more widely accessible. (This CD features the piano duo version.) The piano transcriptions of the four symphonies were undoubtedly the only way to hear them at the time, and they are astonishingly well-crafted arrangements that successfully convey the characteristics defining the original works—such as their nobility, lyricism, and earnest grandeur. Solo piano arrangements and four-hand piano arrangements of the “Symphonies Nos. 3 and 4” can also be heard on Naxos 8.554117, 8.554119, and 8.554822.
