[Kent Nagano & the Hamburg Philharmonic Complete Their Recording of Brahms’s Complete Symphonies] Kent Nagano served as chief conductor of the Hamburg Philharmonic—an orchestra with deep ties to Brahms—from 2015 to 2025. In 2024, he received the Federal Cross of Merit and the Brahms Prize from the Brahms Society, and during his tenure, he was also named the orchestra’s third-ever Honorary Conductor. The recordings by this duo—which had been scarce until now—of the four symphonies by the Hamburg-born Brahms and the German Requiem will become an indispensable part of the orchestra’s legacy. Though influenced by Wand and Celibidache, Nagano’s musical approach is not historically informed; instead, he draws a rich, full sound from a large ensemble of modern instruments and weaves melodies with sustained breath. While maintaining a traditional German sound, his approach combines a modern sensibility—respecting the score and rejecting arbitrary distortions—with a freshness that brings out the inner voices and secondary melodies. The First Symphony is a magnificent, masterful performance lasting over 48 minutes; the Second Symphony—known as “Brahms’s Pastoral”—is bright and flowing, carefully depicting shifts in light and shadow and changes in color. The experience of performing these works in Japan prior to the recording lends a live-performance-like spontaneity. The post-performance applause has been edited out.
