Esmé Quartet

Description:

[Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Esme Quartet portrays the bond and serenity of the Mendelssohn siblings, resonating across time] Formed in 2016 by four female musicians from South Korea, the Esme String Quartet—which expanded its artistic scope in 2023 by welcoming Dimitri Murat on viola—presents its first album. Titled “Nui”—the Korean word for “older sister” (or “younger sister”)—this album centers on works by the Mendelssohn siblings and reflects the strong bond of trust the members have cultivated over the past decade, as well as the depth they have achieved as an ensemble. It contrasts Fanny’s only string quartet, written in 1834, with her brother Felix’s String Quartet No. 6, composed shortly after her sudden death, which is notable for its austere expression. The String Quartet No. 6, in particular, is a key piece in Esme’s repertoire that she has performed nearly 50 times over the past decade. Complementing these works is “River at the End of the Mind,” the world premiere recording commissioned from So Juri—a South Korean composer currently active in the United States—in accordance with the ensemble’s policy of always featuring works by female composers. Inspired by the famous Korean song “Omma-ya, Nuna-ya” (“Mother, Sister”), this work encapsulates memory and solace within its serene soundscape, weaving a close dialogue with the siblings’ body of work. This album offers a consistently compelling program, delivered through emotionally rich performances underpinned by solid intellect and high-level technical skill. Naxos Japan
