A compilation album from the "Maris Jansons Edition" (900200), originally released in 2021, is back on vinyl! “More and more people around the world are being captivated by Shostakovich’s music and moved to the very depths of their souls. Shostakovich’s music is unique. It serves as a testament to a painful era brought about by politics, while at the same time standing as a timeless expression born of fundamental human sensations and experiences. This is especially true for me,” said renowned conductor Mariss Jansons. This album features live recordings of two Shostakovich works from concerts held in 2011 and 2012. Shostakovich’s “Piano Concerto No. 1,” officially titled “Concerto for Piano, Trumpet, and String Orchestra,” is a work that also demands virtuosic technique from the trumpet soloist. Shostakovich completed this work in the summer of 1933, just a few weeks after finishing the opera *Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk*, and it is a masterpiece that fully showcases the immeasurable talent of the young, 26-year-old composer. The piano is performed by Yefim Bronfman, renowned for his exceptional technique, while the trumpet is played by Hannes Roibin, a veteran who serves as principal trumpet of the NDR Elbphilharmonie (formerly the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg) and remains active as a soloist today. Although it was expected to be a “Symphony of Victory,” it is in fact filled with satire and irony; this lighthearted work did not align with the wishes of government officials, who were seeking a piece akin to Beethoven’s Ninth.
