Description:
Prince Aeneas, born of the Trojan king and the goddess Aphrodite, was defeated in the Trojan War and drifted to Carthage, where he met Queen Didone, and they fell in love, but Aeneas abandoned her to rebuild Troyes and went to Italy. The remaining Didone... Metastasio's script, "The Abandoned Didone," was very popular in 18th-century Italy, and dozens of composers wrote music for it. Among them, Vinci's work from the Baroque period is the best known, but Mercadante's work was written at the same time as Rossini's, and his use of bel canto in his style shows the innovativeness that led him to Verdi. This performance is based on a meticulous study of the Mercadante score and faithfully reflects the style of performance, allowing the audience to fully appreciate the flowing melody. The female lead roles of Didone and Aeneas, both played by women, give off a subversive charm that is characteristic of this period. Of course, the male singers surrounding them also sing wonderfully. The production is directed by the brilliant Jürgen Flimm, who will leave the Berlin State Opera in 2019.The original and unique direction of the production has remained unchanged despite the difference in opera houses, and this production uses elaborate devices to portray Didone's intense emotions. The lively music under the careful direction of Alessandro De Marchi is also attractive. Naxos Japan
