From 2011 to 2015, the “Beethoven: Complete Piano Sonatas Cycle” (2011–2015) and the “FourElements” recital series (2017–2020), which was themed around the four elements of “Water, Fire, Wind, and Earth,” the “Sonata Series,” which began in March 2023, is a large-scale project conceived by Yu Kosuge—who has moved beyond the ranks of a mid-career artist and is now embarking on the path to becoming a master—to mark his 40th birthday (Yu Kosuge was born in May 1983). Through sonatas by various composers ranging from the Baroque to the contemporary era, the series constructs a grand human drama. Focusing on the pieces featured in Vol. 4, “Mystery & Enchantment”—which brings together the most challenging and significant programs from the project—a session recording took place in January 2026 at b-sharpStudio in Berlin. The album pairs Hiroshi Fujikura’s “Piano Sonata”—written specifically for Kosuge—and “Shadow Pass” for cello and piano with the only piano sonatas composed by Liszt and Berg, respectively. The album’s title derives from the fact that all the tracks on this recording consist of a single movement. (C)RS
