Iimori & the Yamagata Symphony Orchestra / Schumann: Symphony No. 4 The first release on the Yamagata Symphony Orchestra’s independent label, “YSO-Live,” features Schumann and Haydn performed with Principal Conductor Norichika Iimori. Founded in 1971 by conductor Chiaki Murakawa, the Yamagata Symphony Orchestra has been actively performing primarily in its home city of Yamagata. With the support of local residents and a passion for music, the orchestra has overcome various challenges and established itself as a cornerstone of musical culture in the Tohoku region. In 2004, the Yamagata Symphony Orchestra welcomed the talented Norichika Iimori as its music director. Based at the newly constructed, acoustically superb Terusa Hall in Yamagata City, the orchestra continues to captivate audiences with its ambitious performances and programming. This “YSO Live” series was launched as a testament to these achievements and as a new chapter in the history of the Yamagata Symphony Orchestra. This commemorative first album features Haydn’s Symphony No. 85, performed at the 171st regular concert in March 2006, and Schumann’s Symphony No. 4, which was the main program of the 166th regular concert in July 2005. During the concerts, Iimori conducts meticulous rehearsals, records every detail, and then, together with the orchestra members, carefully reviews the playback recordings and engages in repeated discussions to refine the performance for the final concert. This album can be considered a documentary capturing their extraordinary passion and sincere dedication to their concerts and to music. The result is a SACD Hybrid, created by re-examining the performance recordings of all concerts and rehearsals—recorded using the latest recording technology—and editing them in the studio. Here, Iimori and the Yamagata Symphony Orchestra use their fresh sensibilities to create a unique world, bringing to life Haydn’s characteristic wit and formal beauty, as well as Schumann’s characteristic restlessness and elation. ・Haydn: Symphony No. 85 in B-flat major, Hob.
