The reason for his popularity among so many fans becomes clear when you listen to the selected performances featured here. A common appeal of Fukushima’s works is that they allow performers to freely expand their imagination and express their creativity. This may stem from his excellent sense of balance, honed by his background as a performer. Hirokazu Fukushima’s numerous masterpieces are rich in inner depth, with glimpses of human warmth and humor. Another highlight is hearing how each band performs Fukushima’s works with its own unique approach. Following the huge success of the Masanori Taruya Collection, this is a new series of works by a popular composer. It is sure to become a favorite among wind ensemble fans. ・Hirokazu Fukushima Graduated from Tokyo College of Music and completed graduate studies at the same institution. He studied oboe under Akira Hamamichi and composition under Reiko Arima. He is currently active as a composer and arranger for wind bands and orchestras. He also performs with Ensemble Poire, which combines music with performance art and comedy. His awards include the 1999 Asahi Composition Award, the 2003 Shitaya Composition Award, the 2007 Shitaya Encouragement Award, and the 2010 Japan Society for Wind and Percussion Music Academy Award in the Composition category. Her sheet music is published and distributed by various publishers, and numerous CDs of her compositions are available for purchase. She composed the original music for the 2001 National Cultural Festival and the 2008 National High School Comprehensive Cultural Festival. She is a member of “Kyōen,” a 21st-century wind ensemble. His major works include “Lucky Dragon,” “Sinfonietta No. 2: The Bell of Prayer,” “Centennial Celebration,” the symphonic poem “Run, Melos!,” and the Ryunosuke Akutagawa Trilogy (“The Spider’s Thread,” “Rashomon,” and “Hell Screen”).
