Description:

A large work titled "The Long Road" that describes the thoughts and feelings of people tossed about by history in various languages. DECCA Australia is pleased to announce the release of "O Lungo Drom" by German-American composer Ralph Yusuf Gawlik, who is of Roma-Kurdish descent. O Lungo Drom" means "The Long Road" in the Roma language. This large work was composed for chamber ensemble including soprano, baritone, flute, clarinet, cimbalone, piano, and string quartet. The oratorio consists of songs of the Sinti and Roma from different places, with texts from all over the world. This minority has lived in Europe for more than 700 years, during which time they have been subjected to constant discrimination and persecution, going through hellish periods of slavery and genocide. The Long Road is a path of longing and yearning, a path to and from memory. Filled with a deep desire to go far, each step and each footstep along this path contains hope and beauty, both for reawakening and consolation. O Lungo Drom" contains lyrics in 10 languages and Roma dialects, with words by 13 different poets and writers from this minority group. It consists of three parts: Part 1: Ascent, Part 2: Nadir (bottom), and Part 3: Vista (view). The Alban Berg Ensemble Vienna was formed in 2016 when the well-known Hugo Wolf Quartet, pianist Ariane Haering, flutist Silvia Careddu and clarinetist Alexander Neubauer came together. Its name was bestowed by the Alban Berg Foundation in Vienna. The artistic vision of the ensemble is in the spirit of Alban Berg, a composer who was both connected to the past and to the future. Ralph Yusuf Gawlik composes in a wide range of styles, including solo, chamber, orchestral, electronic, film, and choral music, often exploring his own complex international heritage. The oratorio O Lungo Drom, premiered by the Alban Berg Ensemble Wien at Berlin's Konzerthaus on October 23, 2022, is one remarkable work in music history. The oratorio premiered to great acclaim on the 10th anniversary of the erection of a monument to the European Sinti and Roma who were massacred under the Nazis. In O Lungo Drom, composer Ralph Yusuf Gawlik sets to music the centuries-old history of European minorities with great sensitivity. The texts are written by Sinti and Roma from many European countries in their native languages and Roma languages. The composer has chosen the texts in a balanced way and has succeeded in expressing in this oratorio the influence that minorities have always had on European cultural history, especially in European art music. This extraordinary musical work pays tribute in a special way to the cultural achievements of the Sinti and Roma, for which I could not be more grateful, and I am proud and delighted by their dedication."--Romani Lohse, Chairman of the German Central Council With full lyrics and translation (English and German).
