The Vienna Recital" is the new album by pianist Yuja Wang, winner of the "Best Classical Instrumental Solo" category at the 66th Grammy Awards in February 2024. It consists of music from his acclaimed 2022 Vienna Recital. The star pianist showcases his passionate virtuosity in lesser-known pieces by Gerge Ligeti and Nikolai Kapustin, his mature musicianship in masterpieces by Beethoven and Scriabin, and his musical imagination in Isaac Albéniz's majestic collection of small works The music of Isaac Albéniz is also on display. The program concludes with an encore that reflects a musical history that spans from Christoph Willibald Gluck to Philip Glass. While the accomplished technique and precise interpretation characterize the pianist's playing, there is no loss of lyricism. The Austrian daily "Der Standard" described Yuja Wang's superb piano recital as "the hall went crazy. The works on the album combine and harmonize selections from different periods in a seemingly freewheeling but ultimately cohesive manner. There, the thematic structure and expressive possibilities of one work allude to or suggest the pieces that follow. It is not unlike a gallery exhibition surrounded by a variety of artists, where the curator carefully considers the size of the venue and the size of each painting. This sense of an evidently systematic flow and gradually increasing momentum dominates Yuja Wang's exciting performance order of peaks and valleys. I believe that every program has its own life and reflects my current feelings. (UNIVERSAL MUSIC/IMS)
