The Philips recordings of the Dutch Wind Ensemble—an ensemble that made significant contributions to the Dutch music scene in the 1970s—are being released together for the first time. A 17-CD box set. Includes recordings released on CD for the first time. The Netherlands Wind Ensemble was founded in 1959 as a wind quintet but soon expanded to perform Classical-era serenades and divertimentos. Although these works were not widely known at the time of their composition, they were later recognized as masterpieces of light music. Among them, Mozart’s “Gran Partita,” Beethoven’s late octets, and the superb octet partitas by Franz Grummer—a contemporary of Beethoven in Vienna—have become particularly well-known. When they began recording for Philips in 1968, they were instantly acclaimed—whether under the baton of Ed de Waart (who himself had initially been a member of the ensemble as an oboist) or performing pure chamber music—for their technical precision and their outstanding, witty interpretations. They have also performed with the hugely popular Dutch soprano Elly Ameling. They have long performed contemporary music as well; in addition to wind works by R. Strauss and Stravinsky, the “bad boy” of classical music from the 1920s and ’30s —the German-American composer George Antheil—was recorded live at the 1976 “Netherlands Arts Festival.” Universal Music/IMS
