The phrases are engraved neatly and beautifully, and a strong luster emanates from the deep hues of the crystals. The rich European emotion, filled with piano beauty, stirs the heart! These days I listen to jazz like a gold digger seeking discovery. Most of the time I'm digging only for clods of earth, but there are times when the clods themselves are so exhausting that I find myself falling in love with them. But there was Lakatosh, just like the shining gold in the bottom of the creek where I stopped after a long day's work. The pendulum swung suddenly with the neatness of the opening song, "You Must Believe In Spring. It sent a different kind of fresh air into my heart, which had been soaked with Bill Evans' heavy playing. There is always this kind of small discovery in Lakatosz's jazz. Felteni Kell" is a Hungarian popular song with a universal tear-jerking melody, but it refuses easy sentimentality with a solemn touch throughout. The title track "Bumerang" transforms the quartet into a neo-mainstream style quartet. Lakatosz provides support and brings out the full flavor of the dynamic tone and fluid phrasing of Gabor Bora, an up-and-coming tenor player from his native Hungary.It is not an easy feat for a musician like him to avoid loud self-assertion and to play within a completed format every time. Just as jazz music that never happens is boring, there is a lot of music out there that is boring and full of "quirks" in its quest for cutting-edge jazz. Sometimes the attempt takes the listener somewhere. But most of them don't take you anywhere. But don't worry. Even in this day and age of déjà vu rather than discovery, Lakatosh, like a fish in an aquarium, is always taciturn and always makes something happen.
