Holliger's historic Schubert Zycles is finally in its fourth installment! He carves out another meeting of the minds with two youthful early symphonies. A world-class oboe player, a composer with a unique way of speaking, and an exceptional conductor who can find new beauty in well-worn works. Heinz Holliger, who has been in the spotlight for the past few years for his diverse activities as a multi-instrumentalist, will turn 80 in 2019, and in the fall of the same year he will hold a concert in Japan to commemorate his 80th birthday, which will be the culmination of his musical activities. In addition to conducting four orchestras in his own compositions as well as works by Schubert and Schumann, he also participated in his own compositions and chamber music as an oboe player, demonstrating his unprecedented activity as a musician. This album is the fourth in a series of recordings of Schubert's complete symphonies with the Basel Chamber Orchestra that began with 2018's Great to celebrate Holliger's 80th birthday in May 2019. The previous three albums have been critically acclaimed, receiving the highest scores for both performance and recording in FONOFORUM and GRAMOPHONE magazines, and the Japanese release of "Great" was selected as a "Record Geijutsu" Special Mention.Holliger described the qualities of Schubert's symphonies as "music that, like Mahler's, has a lovely sound and a worldliness that is like drinking wine in a Viennese tavern, but in a moment of horrific death. He points out that "bright colors are always next to darkness and abysses," and emphasizes that the use of period instruments by different instruments allows for the acquisition of "transparency and shadows of sound. Symphony No. 2 was written in 1815, and although it retains strong influences from Mozart and Beethoven, it shows Schubert-like qualities in terms of the character of the theme and tonal structure, and the second movement is written in a variation form similar to Haydn's. The second movement is written in a variation form similar to Haydn's. The third movement, also written in the same year, clearly shows Schubert's individuality. The first movement's Allegro theme foreshadows the "Great. The Devil's Villa" was written when he was only 16 years old, and its bizarre and precise sound is impressive. The "Anfonzo and Estrella" was written in 1822 in the style of an authentic Italian opera, and although Schubert was quite confident in his work, it was not well received and was never performed in Vienna.The album collects works from Schubert's relatively early years, and Holliger colorfully portrays the appeal of these young, vigorous, and ambitious works.
