A masterful performance by Nigel Rogers, a pioneer of early music singing John Dowland is one of England’s greatest composers. He was recognized throughout his life as an outstanding lute player, and his songs have always been popular. Dowland’s most distinctive trait as a songwriter was likely his remarkable ability to create a musical atmosphere that perfectly suited the poetry. In 1610, Robert Dowland (1591–1641), the son of John Dowland—who was then a minor composer—compiled a collection of works by various composers titled *A Musical Banquet* and published it under his own name. This collection features a wide range of selections from France, Italy, and England. It was the first lute songbook to adopt this approach, presenting European music from around 1600 to audiences ranging from the court to the common people. Nigel Rogers (1935–), a leading tenor in early music, began singing as a boy soprano at a young age and studied as a choral scholar at King’s College, Cambridge. After graduating, he first studied abroad, training in Munich under the renowned baritone Gerhard Husch, who was also very popular in Japan. In the early 1960s, he toured the world before returning to England, where he began to develop a keen interest in Baroque music. He became a member of the Munich Early Music Studio led by Thomas Binkley and emerged as one of the pioneers of early music performance in vocal music. In addition to singing the title role in Monteverdi’s opera *Orfeo*, conducted by Jürgen Jürgens, he sang the tenor arias in the *St. Matthew Passion* recorded by Annerose in 1970. He is a singer who transformed musical interpretation through his vocal techniques and natural vocal production in works ranging from the Middle Ages to the Baroque period. The two albums included in this set feature a treasure trove of beautiful, melancholic melodies accompanied by lute and viola da gamba, performed by Nigel Rogers, Jordi Savall, Paul Odette, and Antony Bales.
