Formed by members of the Liszt School of Music, the Takács String Quartet is one of the world's finest string quartets and was inducted into Gramophone magazine's Hall of Fame list in 2012, alongside Bernstein, Heifetz, Janet Baker and others. The quartet is the only string quartet to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. The Takács String Quartet has specialized in Austro-German programs such as Schubert, Brahms, and Schumann, but this time they will perform the string quartets of Benjamin Britten (1913-1976), the greatest English composer of the 20th century! Britten wrote a number of string quartets including studies in his youth, but here we have three of his most highly finished "numbered" works: No. 1, composed in 1941 when he escaped military service and came to the U.S.; No. 2, composed in 1945 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Purcell's death and highly acclaimed as a masterpiece; and No. 3, written in 1975, the year before his death.
