Animal Collective, one of the leading US indie bands that dominated the indie scene in the '10s and continues to evolve, has released their newest album "Isn't It Now? Released amidst the buzz surrounding the recent release of the 22-minute epic "Defeat," the album features four band members - Avie Thea, Panda Bear, Deeken, and Geologist - and Grammy Award-winning producer Russell Eleverd, who has worked with D'Angelo, Kamasi Washington, and The Roots, among others, The album was co-produced by Russell Elevard, a Grammy Award-winning producer who has worked with D'Angelo, Kamasi Washington, and The Roots, and Elevard also participated in the mixing process. Animal Collective has always been a playground for its members, an open space for new ideas and influences, a project that allows them the freedom to try just about anything with a "let's try it then" attitude. Maybe for Panda Bear it means being able to focus more on his drumming, or for Deeken it means being able to dig deeper into his piano playing. Or maybe it gives Avie Thea and the geologists more room to explore their interest in Renaissance music (Gregorian chant, hurdy-gurdy, beautiful polyphony). Such impulses are the essence of "Isn't It Now? This extraordinary album is a fascinating landmark on a journey full of joyful detours for Animal Collective.At 64 minutes, "Isn't It Now?" is Animal Collective's longest album to date. About a third of the way through, "Defeat" is a mesmerizing, explosive ode to hopeful perseverance. But it is also a curiously simple statement of the aftermath of real anxiety, beauty, nostalgia, progress, sadness, and hope, welcoming the listener and offering a slow breath. They used up to 24 channels and completed this work in only 12 days. Not only did they perform these songs on the "Time Skiffs" tour, but they were also able to work together again in the same room, calm, engaged, and motivated. They also quickly hit it off with Elevado, and although their experiences with each other were very different, they were able to move into new territory from there. Isn't It Now?" is the most collaborative and cooperative work Animal Collective has ever done, accidentally providing that ineffable familiarity to some of the best songs they have ever written. The nine songs included here are successful works of attitude and execution from start to finish.
