The Rachmaninoff International Orchestra (RIO) was newly founded by Mikhail Pletnyov.Two discs have been released on SACD Hybrid: "Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake Suite" (20-11067) and "Rachmaninoff's Complete Works for Piano and Orchestra" (20-11067), conducted by Kent Nagano and performed by Pletnyov on piano. The Rachmaninoff live performance is now available on Blu-ray. Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943), one of Russia's leading composers, was an accomplished pianist and composer of many piano works. There are a total of five concerto works for piano. They were written at different times and have their own unique character. This disc contains all of them and traces the evolution of Rachmaninoff's writing style. Pletnyov's performance brings out the full character of each piece. The fresh pianism of No. 1, written for his final examinations while still a student at the Moscow Conservatory, is a perfect example of Rachmaninoff's masterpiece. The second piece is one of Rachmaninoff's masterpieces and one of the most famous pieces of piano music as a whole. The third piece, which boasts the highest degree of technical and expressive difficulty.The fourth piece has a different solemn atmosphere and mature romanticism from his previous works. The "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini," which uses the theme from No. 24 "Theme and Variations" of Paganini's "24 Caprices," has a sweet and delicate atmosphere typical of Rachmaninoff. He is a great admirer of Rachmaninoff's music, and he has worked on Rachmaninoff's works as a conductor and pianist with great dedication. In 2023, he will give a concert of the complete works with the East Philharmonic Orchestra, and if you want to hear Rachmaninoff, this is the place to be. This live recording was made at the new Roset Concert Hall in Switzerland, and is the first public performance of the orchestra since its formation. (King International)
