Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) is one of the most important British composers of the 20th century and one of the most celebrated symphony composers of all time. His nine symphonies are in a variety of forms, some classical in style, some with voices, and others adapted from music composed for film. The musical language changed so much that when Symphony No. 4 was premiered, the audience was reportedly perplexed by the difference from the gentle atmosphere of the previous work, Symphony No. 3. The Eighth Symphony is a return to the classical form, a little smaller in scale, but with more elaborate content, and the first movement takes the form of a variation, making it a symphony with a great deal of listening pleasure. These two symphonies and No. 4 will be conducted by Ryan Wiggleworth, a young conductor and composer born in 1979.He is known as a leading figure in the British music world, currently active as a composer for the British National Opera. He is also an outstandingly talented conductor, and in this Vaughan William, he perfectly controls the orchestra and gives us a brilliant sound. As you already know about Jurowski, his repertoire has been expanding. He has recently expanded his repertoire even further, and he is also building an increasingly good relationship with the LPO. The kind of intimate music heard here has such an impact that it even overturns the image of Vaughan Williams that we have had up to now. Naxos Japan
